A creative path guiding me home

My watercolour art - a return to painting (5.4.25)

They say the spring equinox is a time of renewal, fresh starts - mirroring nature's awakening. How magical then, to have been gifted, on the 21st March, Drawing on Grief by Kate Sutton.

With pencils sharpened, and a sorrowful heart, l spent the remaining days of March nestled away in a serene corner of Southern Switzerland, Canton Ticino. Its soothing landscape - a haven, l frequently return to when seeking solitude. It proved to be the perfect location to open up this book, and begin exploring my personal loss through creativity.

Reflecting on this moment in time, and the subsequent days thereafter, l've come to realise something rather remarkable, and wondrously significant was playing out...the drawing activities within the book were guiding me back to painting. l was beginning to feel ready to pick up my paintbrushes once again, and return to creating art.

A wonderful realisation!

By drawing out treasured memories, scribbling down comforting quotes, and doodling directly in the pages of the book, l was steadily opening up my creative heart.

Filled with prompts, questions, and plenty of space for visual expression, Drawing On Grief gently encouraged me to explore my own grief, emotions, and recollect memories of my mum, in such an engaging way. In retrospect, it guided me home - back to my own artistic roots.

Kate Sutton's personal story shared in the introduction, acts as a warm invitation to approach loss with self-compassion, and at a pace that feels right to you. l certainly found the dip in and out approach liberating - enabling me to choose random prompts which resonated with me.

"Getting in the flow whilst drawing and being creative has its own huge array of healing benefits", these words from Kate's introduction beautifully ring true.

It's with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation, l continue to water my creative roots - a revived flower, leaning towards the sun.
